Start with their priorities
Ask “What would make this week easier?” and leave room for an answer you didn’t expect. Your parent may want help with a grocery pickup, a phone setting or a closet they’ve been meaning to sort. Let them help choose the task and how involved they want to be.
Choose a useful first task
Errand help can start with a shopping list or a pickup. Patient tech help can focus on a phone feature they want to use. Organization help can begin with one shelf or cupboard. If caring for a pet is the immediate need, explore pet care assistance.
These are everyday practical tasks. If the need involves personal or clinical care, raise that directly so the conversation can clarify what kind of provider is appropriate.
Bring a short list to the conversation
- The community where your parent lives and the task they’d like help with.
- Who should join the consultation and make decisions about the plan.
- Preferred timing and any access considerations to discuss privately.
- How you’d like to handle purchases, costs and any agreed updates.
You don’t need a complete plan before reaching out. Leave medical records, account details and entry codes out of the initial message.
Agree on the next step together
Foothill Helping Hands offers a free consultation and a personalized quote. Talk through the scope, availability and cost, and make sure your parent is comfortable with the arrangement. Sending an inquiry starts that conversation; it does not book a visit.
A note you can adapt
“I’m reaching out for my parent in Pasadena. They’d like help picking up groceries, and we’re exploring what that could look like. Could we talk through availability and cost together?”
Use your own words and your parent’s community. We serve Sierra Madre, Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia and the Greater San Gabriel Valley.
